Atelier Studio Box

The idea behind Atelier Studio Box was to make a new subscription service for everyone—knowing full well that makeup has no gender, and that their demographic was a creative, barrier-breaking group who love to explore.

We leaned into the idea of each person being a “masterpiece-in-progress”, that no one is ever truly finished, and into the joy that comes with expressing one’s creativity in evolving and exciting ways.

Much of the branding revolves around elements that
would invoke artistry and experimentation, creativity while not being overly-polished or taking itself too seriously — such as rough hand-lettering, textured brushstrokes and spilled paint.

A brand like this offers a lot of different opportunities for type to play a major and diverse role in the messaging; since the founders wanted to invoke both luxury and dynamism, we selected a particular clean sans-serif as the core of the brand, with a characterful serif and heavy doses of hand-lettering to display the major messages.

Since Atelier Studio Box is not a makeup company, but a subscription to try new products from others, their offering is always changing—so it would make sense for packaging and promotional products to be constantly changing. In this case, rotating artists would contribute different patterns for impermanent elements, to keep things feeling fresh and alive.
